In May 2008, Christopher Wainwright became the General Manager of the Adelaide Youth Orchestras. An organisation where he has had the magnificent opportunity to implement change, achieve results and foster a new direction and vision for this impressive youth arts company. His unique engaging leadership style has resulted in significant philanthropic and corporate support, increased performance opportunities and recognition as a key player in SA’s music education sector. The outcomes achieved through developing and implementing AdYO’s inaugural business plan, resulted in being awarded the 2010 SA Woodside Better Business Award in the coveted Australian Business Arts Foundation Awards.
Prior to joining the Adelaide Youth Orchestras, from September 2006 – April 2008, Christopher was Arts Access SA’s inaugural Communications & Audience Development Officer.
Between 2002 and 2006, Christopher worked as a journalist for Our Community’s quarterly magazine, Business Community Intelligence and as a freelance arts journalist with Arts Hub Australia, State of the Arts and the Australian Financial Review. His success as a journalist was underpinned by a 12-month mentorship he received in 2002 from the Helpmann Academy to work with Dr Graham Strahle who writes for The Australian and The Adelaide Review.
Working in the arts as a communications and marketing manager is just one aspect of his career. He has also worked as a corporate social responsibility journalist for Our Community’s quarterly magazine, Business Community Intelligence and as a freelance arts journalist with Arts Hub Australia, State of the Arts and the Australian Financial Review.
Between working as a journalist, Christopher was also a successful an arts public relations and marketing consultant who assisted a small Adelaide classical music organisation, including: Adelaide Baroque, Recitals Australia and the Accompanists’ Guild of South Australia to gain frequent local and national media coverage.
Christopher is a graduate from the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music with a 1st class Bachelor of Music, Honours degree in Musicology and with a Masters in Management (Arts), majoring in arts and human resources management from the University of South Australia.
