Martin Butler

Conductor of Adelaide Youth Strings

Martin Butler was 11 when he received a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music, London. He studied music composition at Surrey University under Reginald Smith-Brindle and Robin Maconie, graduating with a first class Honours and Masters Degree.

In 1981 he moved to Portugal, where he worked as a violinist in the ‘Teatro Nacional de São Carlos’ in Lisbon. During his last year in Portugal, Martin changed to the viola section of the orchestra and in 1989, he came to Adelaide and joined the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Martin has been conductor of the Burnside Symphony Orchestra (one of Adelaide’s community orchestras) for the past five years. He also conducts at State Music Camp, workshops for the Australian String Teachers’ Association, and at St Peter’s Boys’ College. In the last few years Martin has conducted his own arrangements for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Christmas Proms concerts.
