Established in 2001, the Adelaide Youth Orchestras (AdYO) offers South Australia’s most talented young musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform under the direction of Adelaide’s most inspiring conductors and tutors. Aged between eight and 24, AdYO musicians are handpicked through a rigorous audition process.

Our three orchestras, the Adelaide Youth Orchestra, Adelaide Youth Sinfonia and Adelaide Youth Strings, provide orchestral development pathways for young musicians.

Annual Program

AdYO’s annual program includes rehearsals, tutorials, concerts, music camps and tours.

Each orchestra presents several concerts at venues around Adelaide, including Elder Hall and the Adelaide Town Hall.

Highlights of AdYO’s annual program includes:

  • Performing concerti with international soloists for the Adelaide Youth Orchestra
  • Tutorials and intensive rehearsals with musicians from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Elder Conservatorium of Music
  • AdYO’s Gala Concert in the Adelaide Town Hall
  • AdSI and AYS Rehearsal Camps in the Adelaide Hills
  • AYS Schools Tour
  • AdSI’s sell-out Babies Proms for 0-5 year olds

Commitment

Performing with AdYO requires a significant commitment from musicians and their families for the entire year. AdYO activities must take precedence over sport, social and work commitments hence applicants are advised to carefully consider their ability to attend all rehearsals, concert performances and camps.

With the exception of percussionists and pianists, applicants must have their own instrument.

AdYO clarinettists must have access to an A and B-flat clarinet.

All applicants must be studying with a recognised professional music teacher.
