2012 marks the start of a new and exciting decade for the Adelaide Youth Orchestras.
Our conductors have programmed works that will inspire audiences, while challenging AdYO’s gifted young musicians.
For this year’s Maestro Series, I’ve chosen works including Shostakovich’s joyous Festive Overture, Tchaikovsky’s much loved Capriccio Italien and the Violin Concerto of Kabalevsky. These works provide our young players with much needed musical stimulation and ensure they continue to achieve the fine standards of musicianship our audiences have come to expect.
Last year, cellist Pei-Sian Ng (Principal Cellist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra) joined the Adelaide Youth Orchestra for a stunning performance of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, an unforgettable experience for players and audience members alike. In keeping with this tradition of regularly introducing our players to the finest international artists, we have this year invited Konstantin Shamray, winner of the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition, to perform Rachmaninoff’s dramatic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in our Adelaide Town Hall Gala Concert.
AdYO also provides opportunities for our own outstanding young players who aspire to careers as soloists. This year three AdYO members – Tianyou Ma, James Morley and Helen Seppelt – will each perform a concerto with the orchestra. This is an essential early step in any young soloist’s career and one they will remember for the rest of their lives.
I have also invited two fine conductors to work with AdYO this year. Luke Dollman, who is fast developing an impressive international career, and David Sharp, who divides his time between playing cello in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and conducting their popular Tea and Symphony programs, will, I know nurture and enthuse our musicians to achieve their best.
Adelaide Youth Strings, under the inspirational guidance of Martin Butler, will perform at a range of venues including the Botanic Garden and Elder Park, as part of ASO Santos Symphony under the Stars. In an expanded programme, Adelaide Youth Sinfonia heads a community concert at Golden Grove and introduces young children to orchestral music at the Adelaide Festival Centre and Grainger Studio.
It is only thanks to the generous support of sponsors, government, donors and our young musicians and their families that we are able to present our popular concerts series. In particular, I would like to thank Riverland Water, Saab Technology, The Advertiser and the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation who continue to play an important role in our success. I am also pleased to welcome a number of new sponsors, including Adelaide BMW, Kennedy and Co and our second philanthropic partner, the Thyne Reid Foundation.
I very much hope you’ll be part of our exciting and enriching 2012 concert season.
