Martin Phillipson

Martin Phillipson began his trumpet studies at an early age attending the Sydney Conservatorium High School before obtaining his Bachelor and Master Degree under  Daniel Mendelow and Gordon Webb. During this time, he also worked regularly with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Opera and Ballet, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Brass Ensemble with Paul Goodchild and formed the Australian Brass Quintet with Dan Williams.

After touring with the Sydney Symphony to Europe in 1995, Martin moved to Germany where he studied with Max Sommerhalder at the Detmold Hochschule fur Musik.  After graduating, he became an assistant teacher there before Principal Trumpet positions with the Malaysian Philharmonic and  Singapore Symphony Orchestras. Martin took up Associate Principal Trumpet with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 2001.  

Martin has played in the Australian World Orchestra including performances with conductors Simone Young and Zubin Mehta and as a baroque trumpeter Martin was a founding member of Australian Baroque Brass. He has also performed with both the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and  Adelaide Baroque. 

In 2013 Martin established the organisation Instruments of Change- which led to the formation of several school primary school ensembles. He has also been a brass lecturer at the Elder Conservatorium  since 2002, and taught at many of Adelaide’s leading schools. Martin sits on the advisory committee for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Learning and Outreach program, and has performed and toured to South Australian Schools for Musica Viva in an education Brass group called “The Brasshoppers”.
