TRIBUTE TO JOHN CURRO AM MBE
The death of John Ronald Curro, AM MBE, founding director of the Queensland Youth Orchestras marks the end of a remarkable era in the world of youth orchestras.
John was a mentor to a great number of Australian musicians, many of whom now hold positions in orchestras, conservatoria and private studios across Australia and the world. John formed the first state youth orchestra in Queensland and over the last fifty years it is hard to think of anyone who has had more influence on the young musicians of Australia. When John started the Queensland Youth Orchestra, he couldn’t have known how important this ensemble and those that have followed and grown from it would be in the ensuing years.
It was John who convinced me that the viola would be my instrument. He also gave me my first conducting lessons and supported my career over the time I have known him. His was an enormous presence and all of us who were lucky enough to have him as our mentor will keenly feel his loss of for many years.
