Rossini’s glittering Thieving Magpie overture is a perennial highlight, with its startling snare drum opening. The radiant joy and meditative serenity of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto performed by Dean Newcomb, principal clarinet of Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, is universally recognised as a timeless musical masterpiece. Finally, the Pathétique, Tchaikovsky’s greatest symphony is one of the defining sounds of the romantic period with extraordinary intensity and power – one of the composer’s most adored creations.
