For Dr. John Salamon, music has always been part of life.
Growing up with parents who both played in community orchestras, learning an instrument simply felt like the natural thing to do.
Bring the family along to the beautiful Marnkutyi Parirna Theatre at Trinity College Gawler and enjoy an afternoon filled with exciting, vibrant and expressive melodies performed by ensembles from AdYO and Trinity College.
Ever since childhood, music just seemed to be deeply rooted in Sami’s life. He had parents and a sister who all played string instruments, an auntie who was a pianist, and many friends discovering a love of music. With all of that influence, he naturally started playing the violin from a very young age. After years of dedication developing his musical talent, he is now inspiring the next generation of percussionists as a member of the artistic team with AdYO.
AdYO continues to take pride in providing pathways for young people to gain real world professional opportunities. Most often, this occurs in the form of musical experiences. However, AdYO was thrilled to welcome Annika as our marketing and communications intern over several weeks from from April to June. Here, she reflects on her experience…
Music has always been a foundational force in Sarah’s life, with her family encouraging her to start violin at a young age. This passion eventually transitioned into high school, when she played Beethoven 5 for the first time. Her love of orchestral music has persisted through time, with her string quartet making headway locally.
Bassoonist Tim Rosen, who first started playing in 2007 with the Adelaide Youth Sinfonia, has come full circle as a chair supporter through AdYO’s ‘Take Your Seat’ program. “It [Playing in AdYO] helped me develop active listening skills which I use in everyday life.”
Even now, Paris Netting says she still can’t listen to Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony without becoming emotional.
“I can still feel the rush of adrenaline as we reached the end,” she recalls. “My whole body felt exhilarated as we stood for the bows, and I couldn’t contain my smile… and a couple of sneaky tears.”
Following an international recruitment search, the Adelaide Youth Orchestras has appointed celebrated clarinettist, music educator and recipient of the 2015 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year award Lloyd Van’t Hoff to join the organisation in key artistic leadership role.
